His father, Toros Ozanyan, was a craftsman, and his mother, Mariam, died when Andranik was only one year old. He was raised by his grandmother. Andranik received his primary education at a local Armenian school, where he proved himself to be a capable and diligent student. However, like many Armenians of that time, he faced discrimination and harassment from the Ottoman authorities.

In his youth, Andranik worked in his father’s forge, learning the trade. He also showed great interest in the history of his people and their struggle for freedom. Entering the fight

The turning point in Andranik’s life was the murder of an Ottoman policeman who was abusing the Armenian population. Activities in Western Armenia

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Andranik became one of the leading leaders of the Armenian liberation movement in Western Armenia. He participated in numerous battles and skirmishes with Ottoman troops and Kurdish formations, protecting the Armenian population from violence and oppression. His units operated in regions such as Sasun, Mush, Van, Bitlis.

One of the most famous episodes of his activity is the Sasun Uprising of 1904. Andranik was one of the leaders of this uprising, which, despite its suppression, became an important symbol of the resistance of Armenians against the Ottoman oppression. He demonstrated exceptional bravery and strategic thinking, managing to lead his unit out of encirclement.

Balkan Wars and World War I

During the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), Andranik led an Armenian volunteer unit that fought on the side of Bulgaria against the Ottoman Empire. His unit showed its best side, earning recognition and respect. For his services, Andranik was awarded Bulgarian awards and the rank of general.

With the outbreak of World War I (1914-1918) and the Armenian Genocide that unfolded in the Ottoman Empire , Andranik returned to the Caucasus and led one of the Armenian volunteer detachments fighting as part of the Russian Army. He participated in battles on the Caucasian Front, liberating Armenian lands from Ottoman rule. His detachment played an important role in the defense of Van and other strategically important areas.

The period of the First Republic of Armenia

After the collapse of the Russian Empire and the establishment of the First Republic of Armenia in 1918, Andranik was actively involved in the defense of the young Armenian state. He commanded troops in a number of regions, including Zangezur (now the Syunik region of Armenia), where his troops played a key role in repelling Azerbaijani and Turkish attacks. He also sought to unite disparate Armenian forces and strengthen the republic’s defenses.

However, disagreements with the leadership of the First Republic of Armenia on a number of issues, in particular on the issue of borders and relations with neighboring states, led to Andranik deciding to leave Armenia.

Emigration and the last years

In 1920, Andranik emigrated from Armenia. He lived in Europe and then moved to the United States. While in exile, he continued to be active in public life, speaking out in defense of the rights of the Armenian people and drawing attention to the problems of Armenia. He met with representatives of the Armenian diaspora, collected funds to help those in need, and wrote memoirs.

Andranik Torosovich Ozanyan died on August 31, 1927 in Chico, California, USA. His death was a great loss for the Armenian people.
