Gyumri University “Progress”: Education and Science Center

The university offers a wide range of educational programs, including undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies, covering humanities, economics, IT, law and pedagogy. It is one of the first private universities in the Republic of Armenia and the first in the Shirak region. 

Academic structure

Education at the university is organized according to the following educational programs:

1. Bachelor’s degree
Persons with secondary or secondary vocational education can study at the bachelor’s level. The duration of study at the current department: 4 years (in the specialty of dentistry: 5 years), at the correspondence department: 5 years. Graduates receive a state diploma of higher education with a bachelor’s qualification.

2. Master’s degree
Persons with a bachelor’s degree or higher professional education may study in the master’s degree program. Duration of study: 2 years. Graduates receive a state diploma of higher education with the qualification of “master”.

3. Medical College
Persons with basic general education (base 9 grades) with a study period of 3-4 years and persons with secondary (complete general) education with a study period of 2-3 years can study at the Medical College. Graduates receive a state diploma of secondary vocational education with the qualification of a junior specialist and have the same rights as state colleges of the same name.

4. Basic school
Basic school provides general education according to the program of secondary/complete/general education with in-depth study of Russian, English and computer work. The number of students in classes is no more than 12 people. If desired, students also receive a musical education.

Advanced training in computer technology and English is provided at the bachelor’s, master’s and medical colleges. Students can obtain additional education with the qualification of a computer operator and translator of foreign languages, for which a corresponding certificate is issued.

8 bachelor’s, 3 master’s and 4 medical college specialties are accredited.  

All graduates receive a state diploma. Training is conducted according to the following educational programs:

Progress University has a license to operate with current education in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs (continuous and integrated) in the following medical specialties

General Medicine – 6 years of study with the qualification of a doctor

Dentistry – 5 years of study – with the qualification of a dentist

In accordance with the procedure for admission to state and non-state higher educational institutions of the Republic of Armenia, admission to all full-time and part-time specialties of Progress University is carried out through unified and centralized examinations organized by the Assessment and Testing Center (ATC).

Admission is carried out on a competitive basis based on the Average Quality Index (AQI) specified in the diploma supplement and with the guarantee of the admissions committee.   

Persons with a bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree may study for a master’s degree.  

Bachelor’s degree graduates with high marks are accepted to master’s programs without entrance exams and with a discount on tuition fees.

To obtain a 2nd higher professional education, applicants can be accepted to the 2nd or 3rd year by interview.

A 50% discount on tuition is provided to excellent students and representatives of certain groups: orphans (left without parental care), children of soldiers who died in military operations.

A 20% discount for the first year is established for students for two or more students from the same family, demobilized from the army, and unilateral orphans.

University College of Medicine

Admission to the college is carried out by submitting applications on a single electronic platform: dimord.emis.am

Training is available to individuals with basic education (9 grades), the training period is from 3 to 4 years, and to individuals with complete secondary education (12 grades), the training period is from 2 to 3 years.  

All college graduates receive a state diploma of secondary vocational education with the qualification of junior specialist and have the same rights as the state colleges of the same name. Students of all specialties of the college undergo educational and industrial practice in the Gyumri “Medical” center, which is the main base, as well as in other leading medical institutions of the city, which gives students the opportunity to work in parallel with their studies.

Highly qualified college graduates can be enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd years of relevant specialties in state-accredited and licensed universities without entrance examinations.

Various discounts also apply to all college majors.

Basic school

The University’s Basic School provides general education according to the following programs:

  1. Primary education – grades 1-4
  2. Basic general education – grades 5-9.
  3. High school – grades 10-12.
  4. Complete general education grades 1-12.

The training is based on the deepest study of Russian, English, mathematics and IT.

First-grade students receive free textbooks. After school, there is an after-school class. The number of students in a class is no more than 12. If desired, students also receive a musical education. The school has different subject groups. The school has many victories in various subject Olympiads. This is evidenced by medals and diplomas received at the regional, national and international stages.

Teaching staff

The scientific potential of the university’s teaching staff provides an opportunity for further improvement and refinement of research work. Work is underway to organize research work of professors in individual areas and topics, organize problematic research arising from the modern requirements of the republic, and organize relevant research laboratories.

The university has  2 academicians, 5 doctoral professors, 35 candidates of science, and associate professors teaching.

Honorary Doctorates

Sven-David Müller  is a German medical journalist, TV presenter, author and diet assistant. He was born on September 13, 1969 in Braunschweig. 

He is the author of more than 200 books (14 languages ​​- including Russian and Polish) and textbooks on nutritional medicine, dietetics, nutrition and diabetes.

In recognition of his achievements in applied nutritional medicine and practical dietetics, the University of Progress awarded Mr. Sven-David Müller an honorary doctorate (Dr. h.c.).

Sven-David Müller studied applied nutritional medicine at the Danube University Krems and holds a Master of Science in applied nutritional medicine. He is a certified nutritionist and diabetes consultant of the German Diabetes Society.

Markus Ruf – born August 6, 1959 in Langenthal (Switzerland) – graduated in 1994 with a Master’s degree (Licentiate Iur.) summa cum laude from the Faculty of Law of the University of Bern (Switzerland) and was admitted to the BAR association in 1997. He then worked as a practicing lawyer in his own law firm in Bern until the end of 2020. As part of his work, he performed numerous duties as a criminal defense attorney in military trials. During his service in the Swiss Army, he was a liaison officer in the fortress troops and then a clerk and investigating judge in the military justice system (last with the rank of captain).

As a member of the National Council (the grand chamber of the Swiss parliament) for sixteen years and the Grand Council (parliament) of the canton of Bern for more than eight years, Markus Ruf served on several committees, made numerous proposals on various topics and was a very active plenary speaker.

The University paid tribute to Markus Ruf’s long-standing efforts in the field of political, state and labour law (in the Swiss Parliament and as the main initiator of the popular initiative) to make August 1 a national and paid public holiday in the Swiss Confederation, as well as his general work as a lawyer and politician.

In recognition of his political and professional achievements, Gyumri Progress University awarded Marcus Ruf a Licence. iur. (MLaw), Honorary Doctorate (Dr. iur. HC).

Progress University in Gyumri, Armenia today honors Mr. Patrick Held , Legal Advisor and Company Consultant, who was born on April 8, 1986 in Frankfurt am Main/Germany. After professional training and studies in Germany, he worked in various management positions.

Having founded his first own company in the field of consumer protection, in 2019 he took a risk with a partner by founding another company specializing in business consulting and education. In addition to theoretical scientific work, Mr. Held has dealt with historical, political and economic, and above all legal topics, as well as current socially significant problems, always with a view to practical classification and implementation. The main focus of his work was and remains in the area of ​​questions concerning the ethics and morality of economically oriented actions, as well as in resolving the supposed contradiction for the benefit of humanity.

Considering his commitment to science and education, as well as his commitment and care for young people, Progress University has decided to award Mr. Held the title of Honorary Doctor (Doctor honoris causa).

Patrick Held

Mr. Georg Lintner was born on January 8, 1997 in Wels (Austria). After completing his dental degree in Würzburg (Germany), his professional career began in the department of maxillofacial surgery at the Kepler University Hospital in Linz and then at the Wels-Grieskirchen Hospital. After some time, he began working permanently as a dentist in Grieskirchen. As a dentist specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery, he specialized primarily in oral surgery, in conservative and prosthetic care for children and the disabled under general anesthesia.

In addition to his great scientific devotion, he has a profound humanistic view of the world, which manifests itself in his boundless assistance to poor children and students in the form of scholarships. In particular, in the Caucasus and Central Asia, he strives to constantly expand and promote dental care for children and the poor.

Considering his successful professional work, the symbiosis of dental knowledge and multifaceted experience in humanitarian and social activities, the Progress University in Gyumri awards Mr. Georg Lintner the title of “Honorary Doctor of Dentistry” “doctor honoris causa medicinae dentariae”.

In recognition of medical and scientific achievements in the field of liver research and related participation in international hepatological multicenter studies in the field of chronic hepatitis C, hepatitis B viral infection and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), Progress University in Gyumri awards Mr. Aref Al-Debi , born on September 24, 1981 in Freudenberg (Germany), the title of Honorary Doctor “Doctor honoris causa medicinae (Dr.hcmed.)”.

After receiving his general qualification for university entrance in June 2001 as the best student in his year, Aref Al-Debi joined the German Red Cross in the Altenkirchen district of Germany as part of his civil service and successfully completed his training as a paramedic.

After his civil service, Aref Al-Debi studied human medicine at the RWTH Aachen, Germany, where he received his medical license in October 2009.

In November 2009, he took up a position as a resident physician, research physician and research fellow at the Clinic of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Department of Internal Medicine) of the University Hospital Zurich (Switzerland), where Aref Al-Debi was involved in conducting international hepatology multicenter studies in the field of chronic hepatitis C, hepatitis B virus infection and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

As part of his work as a physician-researcher, Aref Al-Debi investigated the antiviral effect and safety of new combination therapies in clinical trials of hepatitis C genotype 1. The therapy included, on the one hand, standard therapy with peginterferon alfa and ribavirin, and, on the other hand, so-called direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) with inhibition of the NS3 protease and NS5B polymerase of the hepatitis C virus. Thanks to the use of these new combination therapies, many patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infections were cured in a clinical trial of hepatitis C genotype 1, and progressive liver destruction was prevented in these patients.
