Goris is considered the most visited place in Armenia precisely because it is home to one of the wonders of our country. This is the Tatev Monastery.й монастырь.


The history of the monastery dates back to the 9th century. Without a doubt, this is one of the oldest monastery complexes in Armenia. The main church was built in 895 by Bishop Hovhannes with the help of Princes Grigor Soufan and Dzagik. In 930, beautiful frescoes appeared on the interior walls. In 906, one of the monastery’s attractions was built – the swinging Gavazan (“Staff”).

The Tatev monastery complex has three churches: the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the churches of the Holy Virgin and St. Grigor, the mausoleum of Grigor Tatevatsi, “Gavazan” and other historical buildings. Here you can see an ancient oil mill with stone millstones, mighty fortress walls on massive rocks, a swinging pillar with a unique medieval structure, the last saint of the Armenian church, ancient frescoes by a European master and the grave of Grigor Tatevatsi.

There you will also become observers of the unusual nature of Syunik and discover the historical treasures of Goris. Tatev Monastery was the cultural center of Armenia. Today it is one of the most visited places in Armenia, and once you come here, you will not be able to return to Tatev. Since 1995, the Monastery has been included in the UNESCO list of attractions.
