Monastery of St. John the Baptist: Spiritual Heritage of Armenia

The Monastery of St. John the Baptist, or Surb Astvatsatsin, is one of the most significant historical and cultural buildings in Armenia. It is located on the picturesque shore of Lake Sevan , in one of the most beautiful corners of the country.

History of the temple

The history of the monastery dates back to the 9th-10th centuries, when the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Armenian people began to actively develop in this region. Surb Astvatsatsin became an important center of Christianity, and its architecture, a combination of traditional Armenian and Byzantine styles, leaves an unforgettable impression. Surb is part of the Sevanavank monastery complex . During the Soviet years, Surb Astvatsatsin was dismantled to the ground, and the stones obtained were used to build a sanatorium.

Interior

The smaller temple of the Sevanavank complex is the Surb Astvatsatsin Church, built in 874 by Princess Mariam of the Bagratuni royal family. It is famous for its beautiful frescoes and stone carvings that tell stories from the Holy Scriptures. The interior of the temple amazes with its beauty and atmosphere of peace.

The monastery today
